No TOP movie for today.
Part character study of a person in religious collapse searching for salvation, a part expressionist treatise on internal chaos, the writer-director chooses the problems that have suffused his whole livelihood and makes them fresh for the 21st century. It is uncompromising and hard, however marks a return into blistering form for among US cinema's most private, influential voices.
First Reformed is a 2017 American drama film written and directed by Paul Schrader. It stars Ethan Hawke, Amanda Seyfried, and Cedric Kyles, and follows a Protestant minister faced with questions of faith and morality while serving as pastor of a dwindling historical church. The film was screened in the main competition section of the 74th Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2017 and was released in the United States on May 18, 2018, by A24.
In maybe a livelihood, Ethan Hawke is excellent as Father Toller, who presides over a church deemed more of a"souvenir store", shortly celebrating its 250th anniversary. He's a timeless Schrader anti-hero, a lone man who drinks a lot, coping with personal tragedy, suffering with cancer and riddled with doubts. His battles are exacerbated when pregnant parishioner Mary invites him to talk with her despairing husband Michael. Michael is a radical environmentalist and -- at a lengthy theological disagreement with Toller -- describes how he"can't sanction" bringing a child into such a fucked-up world. The following question,"Can God forgive us?" Compounded by his disease and the parties of the church being bankrolled by a tainted oil firm, his spiritual resolve is examined. A once sacred man contemplates a decidedly unholy act.
Among Schrader's large touchstones has ever been Robert Bresson's Diary Of A Country Priest and this is the most obvert iteration yet. Shot at a square 1:37:1 aspect ratio, Schrader's movie is austere, recording Toller's daily ritual and struggles from cold, deliberate beats. However, as the movie moves on, the script and design makes more extreme. A romantic moment involving Toller and Mary turns into a literal flight of vision throughout the cosmos afterward over environmental disaster zones. And, being Toller begins on a perverse act of salvation, the movie jumps right into a completely new zone of grindhouse insanity performed into the hymn'Leaning On The Everlasting Arms'.
Toller's introverted life is played against Father Jeffers, the warrior of a popular church, played flawlessly by Cedric The Entertainer, charged here as Cedric Kyles -- that is too serious a movie for these frippery. Seyfried supplies the story's spirit, but this really is Hawke's movie. Convincing as a person of the cloth, he sees colors of empathy, compassion and discontent all awakens to unforgettable wrath, an Oscar front-runner.
